Things to Discuss NOW with your advisees

Advising week for fall 2008 begins March 24th, with registration starting on April 8th. The “8/4 Advising Schedule” gives you suggestions for things to discuss with your advisees in addition to planning courses for next semester.

Remember that Term PIN cards will be distributed to department administrators, and PIN numbers are available via BannerWeb (faculty/advisor menu >> student menu >> view advisee listing) under the heading “Alternate PIN.” You can also access transcripts, degree evaluations, and student information through the “view advisee listing” page. Also remember that the Term PINs exist solely to ensure that our students meet with an academic advisor prior to registration each semester. We hope you’ll take some time with each of your advisees to discuss short- and long-term academic plans, co-curricular experiences, personal issues, etc...

The new Student Progress Report form is online via BannerWeb.  It's a good idea to go back again to any received reports about advisees prior to your meetings with them.  Doing so can help ensure consistent follow-up on any issues that may have arisen this semester.

If you’re meeting with undeclared students who have definite plans to declare a major after this semester, it is wise to encourage those students to contact the department chair of their intended major prior to registration. With many curricular changes coming due to the unit conversion, students may benefit from even a brief conversation with the appropriate department chair. Note that department websites are now up-to-date with requirements in units.

As always, the AARC is happy to support your informal interactions with advisees. If you share a meal or snack with advisees, bring your receipts to the AARC and we’ll be happy to reimburse you. Read our dining policy for more information.
